Karachi mayor revises UC funds after Nipa tragedy

Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab has announced a major change in the funding system for manhole covers and streetlights, declaring that every Union Committee (UC) will now receive Rs 100,000 per month for the purpose.

He said the decision was taken after complaints from several areas that the earlier funds were insufficient and, in some cases, were being spent on salaries instead of neighbourhood issues.

Under the previous system, each Union Committee was given Rs500,000.

The mayor said the amount was meant for resolving local problems, and while many UCs used it properly, complaints continued to surface from different areas.

Wahab said the matter was placed before the leadership, after which the Sindh government increased the share to Rs1.2 million.

He added that despite the allocation for routine civic issues, the expected results could not be achieved.

He said the revised decision has been taken in the aftermath of the NEPA tragedy.

The revised monthly amount will be issued from December.
