Most May 9-10 cases based on assumptions, KP advocate general says

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Advocate General Shah Faisal Utmankhel has said that the majority of the cases registered in connection with the May 9 and 10 incidents were “based on assumptions,” with many accused added months after the events.

Speaking to Aaj News, Utmankhel said a total of 319 cases were filed over the two days, including 29 terrorism-related cases.

However, he noted that suspects in 23 of those terrorism cases have already been acquitted by the courts.

He said the pattern of registering a large number of FIRs in a single day created the impression that a “specific political party” was targeted.

He added that most of the cases lacked concrete evidence from the outset.

Utmankhel also stated that the provincial government has not yet issued any letter regarding the withdrawal of these cases.

He said further action would begin once the minutes of the provincial cabinet meeting are finalised.

The KP cabinet on Friday approved the withdrawal of cases registered against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders and workers on May 9 and 10 during the caretaker government.

The decision was taken during the 41st cabinet meeting, chaired via video link by Chief Minister Sohail Afridi.
