International body to oversee Gaza expected by year-end

An international governing body for the Gaza Strip, part of the next phase of the US-brokered ceasefire, is expected to be formally announced before the end of the year, according to an Arab official and a Western diplomat.

Under the ceasefire agreement, the new authority — called the Board of Peace and chaired by US President Donald Trump — will supervise Gaza’s reconstruction with a two-year, renewable mandate from the United Nations, according to an AP report.

The board is expected to include around a dozen leaders from Middle Eastern and Western nations, sources said.

Alongside the board, a committee of Palestinian technocrats will be named to manage the day-to-day administration of Gaza in the post-war period.

The Western diplomat indicated the announcement could coincide with a planned meeting between President Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu later this month.

The agreement also envisions an armed International Stabilisation Force tasked with maintaining security and overseeing the disarmament of Hamas, a key condition set by Israel.

Officials said the deployment of the international force is anticipated in the first quarter of 2026.

A US official similarly noted that “boots on the ground” could be a reality early next year.

The ceasefire, which came into effect on October 10, has already faced challenges from sporadic violence and mutual accusations of violations.

While the first phase of the ceasefire nears completion, Hamas has yet to release the remains of the final Israeli hostage stipulated under the deal.

Axios first reported news of the anticipated announcement on Thursday.
