Constitutional court to hear PTI plea on election rigging

The Federal Constitutional Court has scheduled a hearing on a Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) petition seeking the formation of a tribunal to investigate allegations of election rigging.

Chief Justice Aminuddin constituted a five-member larger bench, which will take up the case on November 25.

The bench will be headed by Justice Aamir Farooq and will also include Justice Ali Baqar Najafi, Justice K.K. Agha, Justice Rozi Khan and Justice Arshad Hussain Shah.

PTI’s central secretary-general Salman Akram Raja had approached the court for the establishment of an independent tribunal to probe alleged electoral irregularities.

The party had initially filed the petition in the Supreme Court, arguing that a free and empowered tribunal was essential for transparent elections.

Following the enforcement of the 27th Constitutional Amendment, petitions related to electoral disputes are now transferred to the Federal Constitutional Court.

Under this new procedure, the PTI petition was also moved to the constitutional court, which will hold its first formal hearing on November 25.
