Four extortion suspects arrested in Karachi raids

Security agencies arrested four suspects linked to extortion rackets in two intelligence-driven raids, officials said on Thursday, amid a sharp rise in extortion cases across the city.

According to sources, the Special Investigation Unit (SIU) and a sensitive civilian agency conducted coordinated operations after receiving credible intelligence.

The suspects allegedly targeted a car showroom and a marble factory in separate incidents.

Investigators said the group had demanded Rs5 million in extortion from a car showroom owner and opened fire on the premises when their demand was rejected.

Vehicles parked outside the showroom were damaged in the attack.

In another case, extortionists demanded Rs100 million from a marble factory owner in Manghopir.

Sources said the suspects used an international phone number to issue threats and even sent a parcel containing two bullets to intimidate the businessman.

Officials confirmed that extortion complaints in Karachi have surged, with more than 150 FIRs registered so far this year.

Investigations have revealed over 50 confirmed extortion incidents, while more than 45 cases have been solved, according to SIU DSP.

The DSP said the SIU is actively pursuing major extortion networks, adding that notorious names are often misused to pressure victims.

He said authorities have also contacted Interpol regarding Wasiullah Lakho, a key figure believed to be operating from abroad.

“Gang leaders issue directives from overseas, and we are working to dismantle their networks,” the DSP added.
