No-confidence motion against AJK PM tabled in assembly

The Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Legislative Assembly is set to vote shortly on the no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Chaudhry Anwarul Haq after it was tabled in the House on Monday.

The no-confidence motion was tabled in the Legislative Assembly by PPP lawmaker Qasim Majeed on Monday.

Earlier, Opposition Leader Khawaja Farooq Ahmed warned that any PTI lawmaker who votes for the PPP’s nominated candidate could face disqualification.

The session of the AJK Legislative Assembly is underway, where voting on the no-confidence motion will be held today.

Lawmakers from across parties continue to arrive at the assembly.

The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) requires a simple majority of 27 votes for the motion to succeed.

Members of the PPP and PML-N have begun reaching Muzaffarabad, while lawmakers from the PTI forward bloc and other groups are also arriving.

The no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Anwarul Haq was submitted by the PPP on Friday.

The party has formally nominated Raja Faisal Rathore as its candidate for the office of prime minister.

Sources said the PML-N will vote against the prime minister but will not join the government, maintaining its demand for early elections.

The no-confidence motion also carries the signatures of PML-N AJK President Shah Ghulam Qadir and former prime minister Raja Farooq Haider.

Chaudhry Anwarul Haq was elected prime minister in April 2023 after securing 48 votes.

A successful vote would make Faisal Mumtaz Rathore the 16th prime minister of AJK and the fourth premier of the current assembly.

Opposition Leader Khawaja Farooq Ahmed reiterated that any PTI member supporting the PPP candidate could risk disqualification.
