Prada sparks internet frenzy over $775 safety pin

Prada has once again stirred controversy online, this time with a safety pin priced at $775, roughly Rs. 68,758.

The product, named the Crochet Safety Pin Brooch, essentially consists of a metal safety pin wrapped with colourful crochet thread and featuring Prada’s small triangular logo.

A standard pack of safety pins costs only Rs. 20 to 50 in comparison.

Social media users chimed in instantly, filling the internet with jokes, memes, and sarcastic comments about the high-end product.

While one netizen jokingly said, “My grandma did these while watching TV, and should I now open a luxury store?” another asked, “Seriously, are the brands trolling us now?”

Critics said such products underscore a lack of creativity in the fashion industry. “It’s not innovation; it’s absurdity,” said a blogger on fashion.

Others, however, saw it as evidence of growing inequality and pointed out that rich people are simply buying everyday items with designer packaging. One user wrote, “Luxury brands used to sell dreams.

Now, they sell our everyday life, just at 1,000 times the price.”

This isn’t Prada’s first brush with controversy; the brand once faced backlash for selling sandals similar to India’s Kolhapuri chappals while totally disregarding their origins.

Prada is also part of the greater trend within high fashion to make the mundane into something luxurious.

Gucci, for example, had earlier introduced a silver paperclip with its logo for about Rs. 33,000.
