The Senate on Monday approved the contentious 27th Constitutional Amendment, with one senator each from PTI and JUI-F voting in favour of the legislation.

Amid a noisy protest by the opposition PTI, the lawmakers voted in favour of all 59 clauses, marking the culmination of a contentious legislative process.

During the session, presided over by Senate Chairman Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani, a total of 64 votes were cast in favour of the amendment, while no votes were recorded against it.

The chairman announced that the amendment had received the required two-thirds majority.

PTI Senators Saifullah Abro and Ahmed Khan voted in favour of the amendment, while their other party members staged a walkout in protest against the bill.

During the session, PTI lawmakers protested in front of the Senate chairman’s dais.

Senator Saifullah Abro, however, remained seated and did not join the protest, instead supporting the motion to table the amendment.

JUI Senator Ahmed Khan also stood in favour of the bill.

Earlier, Federal Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar presented the 27th Constitutional Amendment bill in the upper house.

During the presentation, opposition members created a noisy protest, tearing copies of the bill.

Opposition senators gathered near Tarar’s seat and staged a noisy protest before walking out of the Senate in protest.

During the clause-by-clause voting process, JUI-F Senator Ahmed Khan and PTI Senator Saifullah Abro cast their votes in favour of the amendment.

In total, 64 votes were cast in favour of the amendment, while two votes were recorded against the first clause.

In the second round of counting, the amendment again received 64 votes in support

Following the approval, the Senate chairman extended congratulations on the passage of the amendment.
