Tabling the report, Senator Farooq H. Naek said that the proposed amendment suggests key changes related to the appointment of judges, the judicial structure, and provincial representation.

The Senate session was presided over by Senate Chairman Yousaf Raza Gilani.

Naek informed the upper house that several significant revisions had been made to the draft, including the proposal to set a five-year tenure for high court judges.

He added that the proposed constitutional court would include representation from all provinces, while a technocrat member would also be added to the Judicial Commission.

According to Naek, a judge’s seniority would be counted from the date of appointment, and the existing seniority of Supreme Court judges would remain intact under the proposed changes.

He stated that the constitutional court would only be able to take suo motu notice after receiving a formal application.

During the session, Chairman Gilani directed the opposition members to join the proceedings and share their views on the committee’s report.
