The party has decided to change its political strategy in Azad Kashmir after realising that the likelihood of success for the motion was low.

The PPP plans to introduce the no-confidence motion at an appropriate time.

Earlier, PPP’s AJK leadership and local lawmakers had decided to withdraw support from PM Anwar-ul-Haq’s government, triggering efforts within the assembly to push for an in-house change.

The party had claimed the backing of 36 members in the AJK Legislative Assembly, surpassing the 27 required to form the government.

The sources said the PPP had consulted the Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) regarding the motion.

The potential political change in Azad Kashmir was discussed in a recent meeting at the President’s House between President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

A few days ago, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari chaired a parliamentary party meeting of PPP Azad Jammu and Kashmir, after which reports emerged suggesting Chaudhry Yaseen had been considered for the post of AJK Prime Minister.

However, the sources indicated internal disagreements over the candidate for the premiership, with some members expressing reservations about Chaudhry Yaseen.

He reportedly faces opposition from a strong faction within the party, while MLAs elected on seats reserved for migrants support Chaudhry Latif.

This led the party leadership to delay the final announcement of the new AJK PM.

Sardar Yaqub Khan was also opposed by some members due to his current positions as President and Prime Minister, while Sardar Latif Akbar enjoys the backing of a senior faction within the party.

The PML-N, according to the sources, assured the PPP that it would support whichever candidate is nominated for the premiership and would back the no-confidence motion, provided the PPP guarantees new elections.

Otherwise, the PML-N would abstain from power-sharing, the sources added.
