PKLI achieves milestone with 1,000 successful liver transplants

In a significant development, the Pakistan Kidney and Liver Institute (PKLI) has completed 1,000 successful liver transplants, placing it among the world’s leading transplant centres.

PKLI was the vision of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who conceived the project in 2017 during his tenure as Chief Minister of Punjab, with the goal of establishing a world-class medical facility offering advanced treatment for liver and kidney diseases within Pakistan.

To date, the institute has not only performed 1,000 liver transplants but also carried out 1,100 kidney transplants and 14 bone marrow transplants, while providing medical treatment to over 4 million patients.

Currently, around 80 per cent of PKLI’s patients receive cutting-edge treatment free of cost, in line with international medical standards.

For patients who can afford to pay, the cost of treatment is up to Rs6 million — significantly lower than comparable procedures in other regional countries.

PM expresses gratitude

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Sunday expressed gratitude after over 1,000 successful liver transplants were performed at the Pakistan Kidney and Liver Institute (PKLI).

The premier said, “With the blessings of Allah Almighty, the sapling planted in 2017 has now grown into a towering tree, benefiting 4 million patients so far.”

In past, conspiracies were hatched to ruin PKLI, the prime minister said and added that PKLI’s Board of Governors was abolished and the institution was rendered non-functional.

Shehbaz Sharif said that when he took charge as Prime Minister in 2022, work was started to revive PKLI.

The prime minister praised Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif for her relentless efforts to revive the institution to start working again at its full capacity for serving humanity.

He further said, “PKLI provides free treatment to 80% of its patients, enabling the underprivileged to access world-class facilities.”

The prime minister also commended the team that worked tirelessly to revive the PKLI and make its operations successful again.
