The recently launched electronic traffic challan system in Karachi has once again come under scrutiny after a citizen received an e-challan for a motorcycle that was stolen four years ago.

According to the affected citizen, his motorcycle was stolen from Tipu Sultan Road in 2020, and a theft report had been duly registered at the Tipu Sultan Police Station at the time.

However, on October 27, he received an electronic challan notice imposing a Rs5,000 fine for a helmet violation allegedly committed on the same stolen vehicle.

Speaking to local reporters, the citizen said that despite notifying the police years ago about the theft.

“Issuing a challan for a vehicle that has been missing for years clearly exposes flaws in the e-challan system,” he said.

Police officials acknowledged the incident and said an internal review has been launched to identify the cause of the error and to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
