UAE scientists create nature-inspired glue to restore coral reefs

Researchers at the Environmental Research and Studies Centre, in collaboration with the Alpha Diving Club and the Fujairah Research Centre, are developing a breakthrough technology to restore coral reefs using a nature-inspired underwater adhesive.

The new material, called SeaTak, is a bio-adhesive modelled after the way mussels cling to rocks in harsh marine environments.

Designed for strength, flexibility, and precision underwater, SeaTak offers a non-toxic and sustainable alternative to conventional marine adhesives.

Researchers say the innovation will enable divers and scientists to plant coral fragments faster and more safely, cutting loss rates and boosting the efficiency of restoration operations.

According to the project team, SeaTak demonstrates how nature can inspire practical environmental solutions, combining scientific innovation with sustainable marine practices.

The initiative is expected to accelerate coral reef recovery and support the UAE’s blue economy goals by preserving marine biodiversity for future generations.
