Punjab tightens crackdown on extremists under new law and order measures

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif chaired a high-level meeting on law and order for the third consecutive day, approving a series of landmark decisions to strengthen the writ of the state and curb extremism across the province.

The meeting decided to enforce the Loudspeaker Act more strictly and establish “whistleblower cells” in every district to monitor violations.

A special unit has also been set up within Helpline 15 to receive complaints against extremist groups and illegally residing foreign nationals.

The government has imposed a strict ban on advertisements, posters, and placards of extremist organisations.

Individuals spreading hate material on social media will face legal action under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA).

Those involved in illegal gatherings or in shutting down markets will be prosecuted under anti-terrorism laws.

Chairing another meeting, the chief minister was informed that over 180,000 youths have been trained under the Hunarmand Programme within a few months — a new provincial record.

More than 75,000 skilled workers have secured employment, while 450 transgender persons have also been provided jobs.

CM Maryam also congratulated Sanae Takaichi on becoming Japan’s first woman prime minister and extended her best wishes for her success.
