According to Indian media reports, the veteran actor had been hospitalised for the past five days and breathed his last in Mumbai on Monday evening.

His nephew confirmed the news of his death.

With a remarkable career spanning over five decades, Asrani delivered numerous memorable performances that became an integral part of Bollywood’s golden era.

His passing has left the Hindi film industry and his countless fans mourning the loss of a beloved performer.

Born on January 1, 1940, in Jaipur, Rajasthan, Asrani belonged to a middle-class Sindhi family.

His father owned a carpet shop, but Asrani pursued his passion for acting early on. He studied at St Xavier’s School and later graduated from Rajasthan College, Jaipur.

To support himself, he worked as a voice artist at All India Radio, Jaipur.

Between 1960 and 1962, Asrani trained in acting under Sahitya Kalabhai Thakkar before enrolling at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune, in 1964.

He made his Bollywood debut in 1967 with Hare Kanch Ki Choodiyan, playing the friend of actor Biswajit. He also starred in several Gujarati films as a lead actor during this period.

A close friend of late superstar Rajesh Khanna, Asrani appeared alongside him in nearly 25 films, including Bawarchi (1972).

In the 2000s, Asrani became a staple in Priyadarshan’s hit comedy films, winning hearts with his roles in Hera Pheri, Hungama, Garam Masala, Chup Chup Ke, Baghban, Bol Bachchan, and several others.

His last appearance was in Dream Girl 2 (2023), where he once again showcased his signature comic timing.

Asrani is survived by his wife, actress Manju Bansal — whom he met during the filming of Aaj Ki Taaza Khabar and Namak Haraam — and their son, Naveen Asrani.
