Afghanistan seeks 48-hour ceasefire extension; Pakistan to decide after consultations

Afghanistan on Friday sought a 48-hour extension to the ongoing ceasefire with Pakistan, while Islamabad said a decision would be made after consultations, according to official and diplomatic sources.

Sources said that following the end of the initial 48-hour ceasefire, calm prevails on both sides of the border, with no reports of fresh firing or clashes so far.

Taliban regime sources confirmed the request for an extension, saying efforts are underway to find a lasting solution to border tensions through dialogue. However, Pakistan’s Foreign Office has not yet confirmed any decision.

A Foreign Office spokesperson said, “The matter is under consideration. A final decision will be taken after consultations.”

Officials said that the temporary truce was aimed at creating space for constructive dialogue to find a practical and sustainable solution to the recent escalation.

The ceasefire, agreed upon two days ago at Kabul’s request, ended Friday evening. It came after several deadly border clashes that raised tensions between the two neighbours.

Earlier, during the recent skirmishes, Afghan Taliban border forces carried out unprovoked firing inside Pakistani territory, prompting a strong response from Pakistan.

Security sources said that dozens of Afghan soldiers were killed in the retaliatory strikes.

The clashes were reported in several border provinces, including Kunar, Nangarhar, Paktika, Khost, and Helmand.

Pakistan has urged Kabul to prevent the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) from using Afghan soil to launch attacks inside Pakistan.
