China on Thursday welcomed and supported the decision by Pakistan and Afghanistan to implement a temporary ceasefire following days of deadly clashes along their shared border, calling for restraint and dialogue to ensure lasting peace.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said Beijing supports both countries in resolving their differences through “constructive dialogue and consultation,” emphasising that stability between Pakistan and Afghanistan serves the interests of the entire region.

“This serves the common interests of both sides and is conducive to regional peace and stability,” Lin said at a regular press briefing.

The spokesperson added that China stands ready to play a constructive role in promoting continued improvement in relations between the two neighbours.

Pakistan and Afghanistan agreed to a temporary ceasefire on Wednesday (October 15) after airstrikes and ground fighting escalated tensions.

“Pakistan and Afghanistan are both friendly neighbours of China and inseparable neighbours to one another,” Lin said, urging both sides to “remain calm and restrained, achieve a comprehensive and lasting ceasefire, and return to the path of political settlement.”
