The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) said on Saturday that Cyclone “Shakti” has intensified into a severe storm over the northeast Arabian Sea, located about 390 kilometres southwest of Karachi.

According to the latest PMD advisory, the cyclone is likely to continue moving northwestward and towards the central Arabian Sea through Saturday evening before turning eastward and gradually weakening by Sunday.

Under the influence of the system, light rain is expected in Karachi, Badin, Thatta, Sujawal, and Jamshoro districts. Winds along the Sindh coast are likely to blow at 40 to 55 kilometres per hour.

At the cyclone’s centre, wind speeds could reach up to 125 kilometres per hour, accompanied by very rough sea conditions.

The department has warned of high sea waves in the Arabian Sea and advised fishermen not to venture into deep waters until October 5.

The PMD said it continues to closely monitor the system and will issue further updates as the situation evolves.
