Karachi inaugurates first Mangrove Biodiversity Park

In a landmark step to preserve the city’s natural heritage, Karachi on Saturday inaugurated its first Mangrove Biodiversity Park, a project designed to protect the coastal ecosystem while raising public awareness about climate change.

Spread over 50 hectares, the park has been constructed using 80% recycled materials, including wood, bamboo, and fishing nets.

For visitors, facilities such as a café and canteen have also been provided, making it both an educational and recreational space.

Speaking at the inauguration, Mayor Karachi Murtaza Wahab called it a “much-needed step” for the metropolis.

<picture></picture>

“Karachi needs more such mangrove parks. Unfortunately, many of our young people have little awareness about the importance of mangroves. This park can serve as an ideal picnic spot for schoolchildren where they can also learn about the environment,” he said.

Veteran actor Sajid Hasan, also present at the event, praised the initiative, saying: “Children are rarely taught about mangroves. Establishing this park is an excellent step to bridge that gap in awareness.”

Mangroves, often mistaken as just trees along the coast, are in fact a vital natural asset.

They absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, playing a key role in combating climate change.

They also provide a habitat for marine life such as fish and crabs, while serving as a sanctuary for migratory birds.

Officials described the park as Karachi’s first attempt to combine conservation with public engagement, offering residents both a green retreat and a chance to better understand the value of protecting mangroves.
