FBR to take action against those who flaunt wealth on social media

The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has decided to launch a crackdown on individuals showcasing their wealth on social media, sources said on Saturday.

The FBR has prepared data of individuals flaunting luxury lifestyles, including expensive cars, lavish homes, designer clothes, and jewellery across platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook.

In the first phase, the FBR plans to audit 100,000 individuals, including those who spend extravagantly on weddings but fail to file tax returns.

Individuals seen wearing $20,000 designer suits at weddings are also under scrutiny.

The FBR maintained that anyone displaying signs of wealth must disclose their sources of income.
If discrepancies were found between declared income and observed expenditure, legal action will be taken.

Additionally, the FBR will compare tax returns from last year with the current year’s filings.

If an individual does not show an increase in income in tax returns but continues to live lavishly or displays luxury goods and events online, strict measures will be enforced.

Sources say the move is part of a broader campaign against non-filers and tax evaders, aiming to expand the tax base and increase revenue for the national exchequer.
