Dengue cases rise across Punjab as authorities issue alert

Dengue cases are climbing rapidly across Punjab, with hospitals in Lahore witnessing a steady increase in patients.

Health authorities confirmed that 23 new cases were reported in the last 24 hours, including five from Lahore.

Doctors say the surge is linked to stagnant water left behind by recent floods, which has created breeding grounds for mosquitoes.

“The number of patients is increasing because of flood conditions,” said Dr Muhammad Dilshad of Services Hospital.

“Anti-mosquito spraying must be intensified.”

According to Punjab Health Department data, the province has recorded 721 cases of dengue so far this year, with 200 reported in September alone.

The situation has prompted concerns among residents as surveillance and fumigation drives remain patchy in many areas.

PDMA issues alert

In response, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a province-wide dengue alert, directing commissioners and deputy commissioners to implement strict preventive measures.

Instructions include ensuring drainage in flood-hit camps, regular spraying in mosquito-prone areas, and maintaining cleanliness in urban neighborhoods.

“All agencies, control centres, and health departments must remain on high alert,” said DG PDMA Irfan Ali Kathia, stressing that daily updates be provided to the authority.

With monsoon rains continuing, officials warn that the risk of dengue and other mosquito-borne illnesses could rise further if immediate preventive steps are not taken.
