Pakistan calls for UN Security Council emergency session after Israeli airstrike on Qatar

Pakistan on Wednesday demanded that the United Nations Security Council convene an emergency meeting following Israel’s airstrike on Qatar’s capital, Doha, on Tuesday that targeted Hamas officials and escalated tensions across the Middle East.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar expressed Pakistan’s “complete solidarity and support” for the Qatari government and its people.

In a statement on social media platform X, Dar said: “In view of the unprovoked illegal Israeli aggression against the brotherly State of #Qatar, #Pakistan, along with #Algeria and #Somalia, has requested an Emergency meeting of the UN Security Council, to discuss the situation and seize itself of this grave matter.”

Parliamentary backlash in Pakistan

Lawmakers across party lines also condemned the Israeli strike.

BAP’s Dinesh Kumar, MQM’s Syed Hafeezuddin, and PTI’s Naseem Shah issued strong reactions, saying Israel has become “a threat not only to Palestine but to the entire region.”

They urged the Muslim Ummah to unite against what they termed Israeli “barbarity,” warning that failure to act now could intensify future threats.

Global condemnation and US reaction

According to Reuters, Israel carried out the strike in an attempt to target Hamas political leaders in Doha, an action widely condemned internationally as a move that risks further destabilising the region.

US President Donald Trump told reporters he had instructed his envoy, Steve Witkoff, to warn Qatar about the strike, but admitted the warning came too late.

Doha firmly rejected the White House claim, stating it received no advance notice, with US officials only making contact while explosions were already taking place in the city.

Following the attack, Trump held separate calls with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. He assured the Qatari leadership that no such strike would be repeated on their soil.

Speaking to the press, Trump admitted that he is not happy with this action. “We want the hostages released, but we are not satisfied with what happened.”

‘State terrorism’

Qatar’s Prime Minister denounced the Israeli strike as “state terrorism” and asserted that Doha reserves the right to respond. “Qatar will not ignore this incident,” he said.

The attack killed five senior Hamas officials, including the son of prominent Hamas leader Khalil al-Hayya.
