Torrential rains lashed Karachi’s Malir, Shah Latif, North Karachi, and Bahria Town in the afternoon under the 10th spell of monsoon.

The Meteorological Department said that the rain, accompanied by thunder and lightning, would continue till September 11.

Heavy rains also occurred in other districts, including Thatta, Mirpurkhas, Umerkot, Tharparkar, Tando Muhammad Khan, Nooriabad, and Ghaghar Phatak.

In Umerkot, a 10-foot-wide breach occurred in a canal, posing a threat to nearby villages.

According to the Meteorological Department, a rain-bearing system is currently hovering over southwestern Rajasthan, India, and monsoon winds have entered Sindh under its influence.

Low-lying areas in Thatta and Sujawal have been submerged due to heavy rainfall, while flooding has also affected the low-lying areas of Gujo.

In Mirpurkhas, intermittent rain caused havoc, destroying sugarcane, cotton, chilli and tomato crops in nearby areas.

Rain is also likely in Kashmore, Sukkur, and Jacobabad, the Met Office said and warned that waterlogging is possible in low-lying areas of Karachi, Thatta, Badin, and Hyderabad.

There is a risk of urban flooding in Mirpurkhas, Tharparkar, Khairpur, and Sukkur, it added.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) also warned that heavy rains are expected in various parts of southeastern Sindh from September 7 to 10, with a risk of urban flooding in low-lying coastal districts.

According to the NDMA, heavy rains may cause flash flooding in streams and hill torrents in the Kirthar Ranges, and in Lasbela and Khuzdar districts of Balochistan.

Rain has also been forecast in Koh-e-Sulaiman and southern Punjab, which could lead to localised flooding in those areas as well.
