Punjab braces for high-level flood after India’s water release

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued an alert for a high-level flood in Punjab following the release of more water by Indian into the rivers.

The PDMA Director-General, Irfan Kathia, said that India released more water into the Chenab River without prior notice, raising concerns that the water surge could rise to dangerous levels.

According to the PDMA, India released more water from Salal Dam, Nangal Dam and Harike Barrage, and a major surge is expected in the Chenab River following water discharge from the Salal Dam.

The PDMA has warned that the additional inflow into the Chenab and Sutlej rivers may cause further damage in areas including Ganda Singh Wala, Wazirabad, Hafizabad, and Sialkot.

A major flood surge is expected to reach the Marala headworks within two days, he said, adding that the administration of the relevant districts have been put on high alert.

The water levels in the Ravi and Chenab rivers continued to rise in Khanewal at Head Sidhnai, Bagar Sargana, and Fazil Shah.

The devastating floods in Punjab have destroyed thousands of acres of crops, besides displacing over 2 million people.
Thousands of people have been forced to move to relief camps.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued an alert for Sindh, stating that a flood surge of 800,000 to 1.1 million cusecs is expected at Guddu Barrage between September 5 and 6.

Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah said the government is fully prepared to deal with a super flood. “Our top priority is to ensure the safety of people and livestock,” he added.
