In a statement on the social media platform X, the chief minister said electric buses will start operating in every district of Punjab by December this year.

She added that the fare for these buses has been fixed at just Rs20 to make travel affordable for commuters.

All electric buses will be equipped with CCTV cameras to ensure passenger safety, Maryam noted, adding that the initiative aims to provide modern, comfortable and environmentally friendly transport to the people of Punjab.

Earlier, the Punjab government approved a large-scale project to introduce 1,500 electric buses in phases.

The first fleet is being rolled out in Lahore and Gujranwala, with expansion planned to other major cities, including Sargodha, Sheikhupura, Sialkot, Gujrat, Rahim Yar Khan, and Dera Ghazi Khan.

The plan also includes the establishment of a Transport Tower Command and Control Centre in Lahore and the installation of charging stations to support the transition to clean energy.

Officials say the project marks a major step toward modernising Punjab’s transport system, reducing carbon emissions, and offering value for money to daily commuters.
