Ambani son’s wildlife centre faces probe into allegations of animal mistreatment

India’s Supreme Court has mandated an investigation into Vantara, a wildlife rescue centre operated by the philanthropic Reliance Foundation, associated with billionaire Mukesh Ambani.

While the court found insufficient evidence to support allegations of illegal animal acquisitions and mistreatment, it deemed an independent inquiry necessary due to claims of negligence by regulatory authorities.

Vantara, located in Gujarat and led by Anant Ambani, has rescued and treated thousands of animals, boasting the largest elephant hospital in the world.

The facility was also a venue for Anant’s pre-wedding celebrations last year, where high-profile attendees were encouraged to wear “jungle fever” attire.

The Supreme Court’s ruling came in response to public interest litigations citing complaints from non-profit and wildlife organisations regarding animal treatment and questioning how the animals arrived at Vantara.

The complaints also accused the Central Zoo Authority of failing in its regulatory duties.

In its written order, the court stated, “We consider it appropriate in the ends of justice to call for an independent factual appraisal.”

A spokesperson for Vantara assured Reuters of the centre’s commitment to transparency and legal compliance, stating they would fully cooperate with the investigative panel, which will be led by a former Supreme Court judge.

The panel is tasked with examining the acquisition of animals, particularly elephants, and investigating claims of a vanity collection of wildlife, while ensuring compliance with India’s Wild Life Protection Act. A report is expected by September 12.

Located in Jamnagar, Gujarat, Vantara houses over 150,000 animals from more than 2,000 species and includes a 998-acre elephant welfare trust, claimed to be the world’s largest facility for rescued elephants.

Protests recently erupted in Maharashtra against the relocation of a 36-year-old elephant to Vantara, as local communities argued the animal held significant cultural and spiritual value.

While Reliance acknowledged the elephant’s importance, it stated the move was in accordance with a court directive.

In March, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Vantara, praising its role in wildlife welfare and ecological sustainability.

Anant Ambani also serves as an executive director of Reliance Industries and is involved in its technology and telecom sectors, including Jio Platforms.

During media tours last year, he showcased the facility’s large kitchens for elephants, which prepare specialised dishes and treats for the animals.
