Kpop ‘Demon Hunters’ dominates box office amidst singalong frenzy

Netflix animated hit Kpop Demon Hunters, has made a significant mark at the North American box office, grossing $18 million during a special singalong event the streaming giant’s first theatrical success, according to the industry estimates.

While Netflix does not disclose ticket sales data, these figures are based on projections from rival studios and exhibitors.

The impressive debut is particularly noteworthy for a platform traditionally resistant to cinema, as the film has already topped the music charts and broken viewing records.

Released in June, KPop Demon Hunters has quickly become Netflix’s most-watched animated film.

The weekend sing-along across five countries attracted enthusiastic fans eager to experience the story of a K-pop girl group that battles demons through music, joining in on the film’s catchy songs.

“This weekend, a streaming production made for home viewing is connecting in ways that theatrical hits seldom achieve”, remarked analyst David A. Gross of Franchise Entertainment Research.

“For 48 hours, this made-for-television film played to sold-out audiences who were singing, dancing, dress-up and fully immersed in the fun, that’s pop entertainment at its finest”.

Despite KPop Demon Hunters’s success, the buzzy horror film Weapons, which held the top spot for the past two weeks, is expected to reclaim its title this week, as Netflix has not released official figures.

The Warner Bros film, which follows the mysterious disappearance of a group of children from the same class, earned $15.6 million from Friday to Sunday, as reported by Exhibitor Relations.

In third place was Disney’s Freakier Friday, featuring Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis, which brought in $9.2million. Fourth place went to The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Disney’s reboot of the Marvel franchise, with $5.9 million.

Rounding out the top five was Universal’s family-friendly sequel, The Bad Guys 2, which earned $5.1 million.

The rest of the top ten included:

•	Nobody 2 ($3.7 million)

•	Superman ($3.4 million)

•	Honey Don’t ($3.0 million)

•	The Naked Gun ($2.95 million)

•	Jurassic World: Rebirth ($2.1 million)
