Bill tabled in NA to create new province ‘West Punjab’

A plan to redraw Punjab boundaries and create a new province under the name of ‘West Punjab’ has been presented in the National Assembly.

The Constitutional Amendment Bill, 2025, was tabled by Riaz Hussain Fatiana in the National Assembly on Tuesday.

The proposed bill states that due to the growing population of Punjab and administrative problems, the creation of a new province is the need of the hour.

Under the proposed plan, Faisalabad Division and Sahiwal Division would be included in West Punjab province, which will encompass Punjab’s second-largest forest, a major agricultural university, and a key industrial centre.

The bill argues that the region has all the attributes necessary for survival as a separate province.

The bill proposes amendments to articles 1, 51, 59, 106, 154, 175A, 198 and 218 of the Constitution, under which there will be a change in the distribution of seats in the National and provincial assemblies.

According to the proposed amendment, Punjab will have 114 general seats and 24 reserved for women, making a total of 138 seats.

Sindh will have a total of 75 seats, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa 55, Balochistan 20, and the Federal Capital 3 seats.

For the new province of West Punjab, it is proposed to allocate 27 general seats and 8 women’s seats.

The move would increase the number of provinces in Pakistan, while the federal capital would retain its separate status.

The National Assembly Speaker has referred the bill to the relevant standing committee for further consideration.
