Karachi accident: Driver in sibling deaths had no HTV, expired LTV licence

A Karachi court on Monday handed over a dumper truck driver to police on a two-day physical remand in connection with the deaths of a brother and sister, who were killed when his vehicle struck them on Rashid Minhas Road.

Investigators told the judicial magistrate that the driver, identified as Firdous, did not possess a heavy traffic vehicle (HTV) licence required to operate a dumper. Instead, he held a light traffic vehicle (LTV) licence that had expired in 2016.

Police said they needed the remand to gather information about the dumper’s owner, verify the driver’s documents, and complete other inquiries.

They also noted that the driver had sustained an eye injury when he was beaten by the public following the accident.

The FIR was registered at Yousuf Plaza police station on the complaint of the victims’ uncle.

An analysis report on seven dumpers set ablaze in the aftermath of the incident revealed that the dumper involved in the crash had no fitness certificate or protective barriers to prevent accidents. The burnt vehicles also lacked trackers and speed monitoring devices.

The fatal crash occurred in the early hours between Saturday and Sunday, killing the siblings and leaving their father critically injured.

The tragedy sparked public outrage, with protesters torching seven dumpers.

In response, members of the Dumpers Association staged a protest at Sohrab Goth, blocking the Super Highway with trucks and trailers. The protest ended after successful negotiations with the government.
