PTI, TTAP launch movement for constitution, fair elections

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf and the Tehreek Tahafuz Ayeen-i-Pakistan (TTAP) on Thursday announced the launch of a movement for the restoration of the constitution and law, fair elections, and the protection of the rights of the common man.

Addressing a press conference in Islamabad, Mahmood Khan Achakzai said that all opposition parties in the country were moving towards a grand alliance.

This alliance is not being formed just for show but for a serious national struggle, he added.

Achakzai said that some people were uncomfortable with this alliance, but we are not going to back down.

“We are committed to an impartial election commission, the supremacy of the constitution, and the protection of the fundamental rights of ordinary citizens,” he said.

He said the party that secured the most votes in the election was being deprived of justice.

Only certain people were being allowed to meet the PTI founder, he said, adding that even his sisters were being denied to meet him.

Achakzai said that we were not against any military officer, but everyone should work within the constitutional framework.

“We are neither abusing nor beating anyone, we are just talking about the Constitution,” he added.

He said that an all-party conference is being convened on July 31 and August 1, to consider the situation in the country. All parties will be invited to the conference, he added.

Achakzai warned that if the problems were not resolved soon, the situation would become more volatile.

Speaking on the occasion, senior PTI leader Salman Akram Raja said that the PTI is the country’s largest political party, but its leaders were being handed down 10-year sentences solely for their affiliation with the party – a complete violation of justice and due process.

Referring to the two-year imprisonment of the PTI founder, he said there were restrictions on freedom of expression, and people cannot speak or walk freely.

Salman Akram Raja emphasised that a fair trial is the constitutional right of every Pakistani, and this facility must be provided to all prisoners, including the PTI founder.

Referring to the new movement, he said this movement was not just for Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf but for the entire country.

Salman Akram Raja said the movement has representation from various political parties, and is aimed at protecting the rights of the common man.

He announced that a nationwide protest would be held on August 5, to send a message to the nation that the struggle for the constitution, justice, and democracy would continue.
