Muslim League-N demands elections in AJK amid deepening crisis

The ongoing constitutional and political crisis in Azad Kashmir took a serious turn on Thursday after the Azad Kashmir Muslim League-N demanded fresh elections.

Muslim League-N leaders made the election demand at a press conference in Muzaffarabad, which was addressed by former prime minister Raja Farooq Haider, Tariq Farooq, Noreen Arif, Barrister Iftikhar Gilani and Dr Mustafa Bashir.

Expressing serious concern over the current political situation in Azad Kashmir, Raja Farooq Haider stated that the constitutional institutions in the region have become completely paralysed.

“At present, there is neither a Chief Election Commissioner nor a senior member of the Election Commission in Azad Kashmir, only one member is working, due to which the institution of the Election Commission has become practically inactive,” he stated.

He also questioned the performance of the AJK Assembly, saying that its session was not being held in accordance with constitutional requirements.

Farooq Haider warned that if the current chaos was not stopped, a serious political crisis could arise in Azad Kashmir.

The Muslim League-N leaders demanded that elections be held in Azad Kashmir in the last week of October 2025 in a transparent manner so that the people could get a chance to decide their fate.

They made it clear that no pre-poll rigging would be allowed and all constitutional institutions, including the Election Commission, should be completed immediately.

Farooq Haider suggested that a plan of action be formulated by taking the leadership of all political parties into confidence and that a fact-finding commission be established against the current government so that the facts can be brought to the fore.
