Ruling alliance secures two-thirds majority in Senate; PPP emerges as largest party

The ruling coalition has gained a two-thirds majority in Pakistan’s Senate, securing a commanding position in the upper house that is expected to significantly ease the passage of legislation and constitutional amendments.

The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has emerged as the largest party in the Senate, holding 26 seats. Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) follows as the second-largest parliamentary group with 16 senators, having the support of an additional six independent members. The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) holds 20 seats, placing it in third position.

The updated composition of the 100-member Senate reveals a strengthened ruling alliance. In addition to the major parties, other political groups are also represented: Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (F) has 7 seats, the Balochistan Awami Party (BAP) holds 4, while the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) and Awami National Party (ANP) each have 3 senators. Six independents, some of whom are aligned with political parties, are also part of the upper house and could play a pivotal role in future votes.

With this numerical edge, the government is now in a decisive position to pass legislation and carry out constitutional reforms without strong resistance.
