Sindh extends deadline for Ajrak number plates; police barred from issuing fines

The Sindh government has extended the deadline for Ajrak-themed number plates until August 14 and directed police not to issue challans during this period, Provincial Minister for Excise, Taxation and Narcotics Control Mukesh Kumar Chawla announced on Monday.

Speaking to the media in Karachi, the minister emphasised that Ajrak is a symbol of Sindh’s cultural heritage and its presence on vehicle number plates will remain unchanged.

“Some people seem to have an ‘Ajrak phobia’. Let me clarify — Ajrak is not going anywhere,” he said.

He reiterated that modern number plates integrated with the Safe City Project are mandatory, but no fines will be issued for Ajrak plates until the new deadline.

“There will be no challans for Ajrak-themed plates until August 14,” he assured.

However, the minister warned that fines will continue for other violations, including riding without helmets, missing vehicle documents, or other standard traffic offences.

“Only Ajrak plates are exempted temporarily — all other traffic rules remain in effect,” Chawla clarified.

The decision comes amid a mixed public response to the newly introduced plates, with some citizens objecting to the cultural design.
