Indian hackers using Pahalgam incident to target Pakistan’s govt, defence systems

The Cabinet Division has issued a special cybersecurity advisory warning that Indian hackers are attempting to infiltrate the systems of Pakistan’s government and defence institutions by exploiting the narrative around the Pahalgam incident.

According to the advisory, hackers are using suspicious emails, WhatsApp messages, and other digital channels to distribute malware.

The malicious files are often disguised under the subject line “Pahalgam Incident” and, if opened, can compromise devices by stealing sensitive information, photographs, and classified data.

Authorities have cautioned all government offices to remain vigilant and adopt strict preventive measures. The advisory has outlined several steps to mitigate the risk, including:

•	Avoid opening or interacting with emails from unknown sources.

•	Scan all attachments using reliable antivirus software before opening them.

•	Promptly report any suspicious communication to the relevant IT administrator.

Sources suggest the hackers are likely backed by a cyber espionage network operating out of India, with the primary aim of accessing sensitive defence and government data.

The Cabinet Division has also directed all federal and provincial institutions to update their digital security protocols, ensure firewalls and antivirus systems are active, and train staff to recognise and respond to potential cyber threats effectively.
