NDMA issues nationwide alert for heavy rains, flooding till July 10

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a countrywide alert for heavy rainfall and potential flooding across several regions of Pakistan, effective until July 10.

According to the advisory issued by the NDMA, there is a heightened risk of flooding in rivers and streams across Punjab, Sindh, Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), and Gilgit-Baltistan (GB).

The alert warns of low-level flooding at Marala and Qadirabad headworks along the Chenab River.

Increased water flow is also expected in the rivers Kabul, Indus, Chenab, Swat, Panjkora, Chitral, Hunza, and other tributaries.

Flash floods are particularly feared in northeastern Punjab, southern Balochistan, and AJK.
The streams originating from the Pir Panjal range in northeastern Punjab pose a significant risk of overflow.

In AJK, sudden flooding is expected in the Jhelum River and its tributaries, while in Gilgit-Baltistan, water levels are projected to rise in the Hunza River and surrounding streams.

Additionally, southern Balochistan’s streams originating from the Kirthar Range are likely to experience flooding.

The districts of Awaran, Khuzdar, Jhal Magsi, Qila Saifullah, and Musakhel have also been identified as high-risk areas.

The NDMA has advised the public to avoid crossing fast-flowing streams, submerged roads, and bridges.

Residents of low-lying areas have been urged to move valuables and livestock to safer locations.

Authorities have instructed vulnerable communities to keep an emergency kit ready with 3 to 5 days’ worth of food, water, and essential medicines.

Local administrations have been directed to ensure the availability of dewatering pumps and machinery for quick response.

All concerned departments have been ordered to make advance arrangements to handle any emergency.

Citizens are urged to stay alert, follow official advisories, and prioritise safety.
