Ruling alliance secures two-thirds majority in National Assembly

The ruling coalition has secured a two-thirds majority in the National Assembly after the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) issued a notification restoring reserved seats, in compliance with the Supreme Court’s verdict issued on June 27, 2025.

According to the ECP, the notification reverses its earlier orders issued on July 24 and July 29, 2024, under which several members on reserved seats were suspended.

The new notification has restored multiple women’s and minority seats in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

As per a breakdown, five women’s reserved seats from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have been reinstated. Also, 11 women’s reserved seats from Punjab have been reinstated. One seat in KP has been allocated to the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (F).

Moreover, two seats each have been allocated to the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP).

The ECP stated that this restoration was carried out in light of the Supreme Court’s ruling on review petitions concerning the allocation of reserved seats.

The development not only grants the ruling alliance decisive numerical strength in the lower house but also positions it favourably for future legislative business.

Simultaneously, some Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) lawmakers occupying general seats in the National and three provincial assemblies have been de-notified following the court’s decision.
