Following sudden earthquake tremors on Monday night, prisoners launched into a riot that led to gunfire, as many inmates jumped over the walls into nearby neighborhoods.

Police, Rangers, and FC personnel swiftly responded, recapturing more than 80 inmates, while over 135 remain unaccounted for.

During the gunfire exchange, one inmate died, and three others sustained injuries.

Over five security personnel, including three from the FC, suffered serious wounds and received immediate medical attention at a nearby hospital.

DIG Jail Affairs Hassan Sahito confirmed that authorities have regained control of the situation and secured the jail.

He explained that inmates exploited the earthquake to escape but assured that no dangerous criminals had fled.

Karachi Additional Inspector General of Police (AIGP) Javed Alam Odho visited the scene and reported no major disaster, noting that most of the escaped inmates were involved in minor offenses.

Sindh Home Minister Zia-ul-Hassan Lanjar conducted an emergency visit to Malir Jail, where SSP Malir Kashif Abbasi briefed him on the unfolding situation.

The minister clarified that inmates did not breach the jail walls; instead, they took advantage of internal unrest, with over 800 inmates leaving their barracks.

Lanjar emphasized that law enforcement officials are conducting raids on the homes of the escaped prisoners and will apprehend them soon.

Sindh Minister for Works and Services and Jail Department, Ali Hassan Zardari, also responded to the incident, seeking a comprehensive report from the IG and DIG of the jail.

The police, FC, Rangers, and other law enforcement agencies initiated search operations around Malir Jail, with some areas undergoing rescue operations.

Recently, parts of Landhi, Shah Faisal Colony, and Malir experienced at least seven low-intensity earthquakes within a 24-hour period, until Monday afternoon.

The situation remains tense following the escape of prisoners from Malir Jail, leading to tight security measures inside and outside the facility.

A heavy presence of FC, Special Security Unit, Rangers, and police has been deployed around the jail, and jail authorities have imposed a complete ban on family visits for prisoners.

According to jail officials, no prisoner has been allowed to meet their family today, resulting in a crowd of visitors outside the jail.

Many individuals appeared anxious as they stood outside, hoping to meet their loved ones.

Jail authorities report that over 80 prisoners have been recaptured so far, while more than 135 prisoners are still at large.

Police sources indicate that a list of the names of the escaped prisoners is being compiled.
