Pakistan braces for dust storms amid heatwave

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a new advisory in response to a heatwave affecting the country.

From May 20 until May 24, temperatures are expected to rise by four to six degrees Celsius above normal.

Southern Punjab, Sindh, and large areas of Balochistan are currently experiencing severe heat, while higher regions may also see above-normal temperatures during the day.

The Met Office has predicted strong winds and dust storms in some low-lying areas during this extreme heat.

Following the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) spokesperson, heat stroke centers have been instructed to remain fully operational, and hospitals and rescue organizations have also been put on alert.

Also, the spokesperson has highlighted that the Emergency Operations Center to be functional.

The PDMA has urged citizens to increase their water intake, take precautions against sun exposure, and keep the elderly and children away from direct sunlight between 10am and 5pm.

A public awareness campaign has also been launched in Peshawar to timely inform citizens about the heat intensity.

Lahore

In Lahore, the weather has turned extremely hot, with little effect from the winds.

The heat has left school-going children distressed, and frequent power outages in many schools have further worsened the situation.

Parents and teachers have urged relevant authorities to take immediate relief measures to safeguard children’s health.

KP

In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, an unusual increase in heat intensity is anticipated from May 20 to 24.

The PDMA has issued an alert, indicating that temperatures could be five to seven degrees Celsius higher than normal.

The authority warned that the intensity of heat will persist in southern and central regions, with risks of dust storms, strong winds, heat strokes, and pressure on water resources.
