According to Chinese media, the key milestone of concrete pouring has officially commenced at the dam site, an essential phase toward the dam’s completion. The project is expected to be finished by next year and is being constructed by Chinese engineers in collaboration with Pakistani counterparts in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The Mohmand Dam, a multipurpose hydropower project, is designed to address Pakistan’s growing needs for electricity generation, flood control, irrigation, and clean drinking water. Once operational, the dam will generate 800 megawatts of electricity and supply approximately 300 million gallons of potable water daily to Peshawar, the provincial capital.

The development comes in the aftermath of India’s controversial statements suggesting a possible suspension of water flow to Pakistan, remarks that were widely viewed as provocative and destabilising. In the wake of this, the dam’s strategic importance has only grown, both for energy security and water sustainability in the region.

Chinese media reports highlighted that India’s post-false flag aggression against Pakistan has not only failed to achieve its intended outcomes but has also backfired diplomatically, as Beijing has doubled down on infrastructure cooperation with Islamabad.

The Mohmand Dam joins a list of high-impact bilateral initiatives under the broader China-Pakistan cooperation framework. Another example is the Diamer-Bhasha Dam, often dubbed by the public as Pakistan’s “Three Gorges Project,” underscoring the symbolic and strategic significance of these megaprojects.

China and Pakistan are also working closely on a range of other projects aimed at enhancing industrial development, agricultural capacity, and quality of life for ordinary citizens, signalling a deepening of economic and strategic ties.

With the dam now entering a critical construction phase, both sides reaffirmed their commitment to completing the project on schedule, as part of their shared vision for regional progress and mutual resilience in the face of external pressure.
