Supporters of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) are voicing considerable disappointment after a recent meeting between Chief of Army Staff General Asim Munir and a US delegation led by Congressman Jack Bergman.

Many PTI sympathizers took to social media to express their frustration over the delegation’s decision not to meet with former Prime Minister Imran Khan, who is currently in Adiala Jail.

The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) reported that the U.S. delegation, which included Congress members Thomas Suozzi and Jonathan Jackson, discussed a variety of issues of mutual interest with General Munir.

Criticism has grown among PTI supporters, who highlighted the failure of the delegation to engage with Imran Khan. User Muhammad Siddiqui directed his comments at Jack Bergman on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “Mr. Bergman, you pledged to do everything possible to secure the release of former Prime Minister Imran Khan from illegal detention. What happened to your promise?”

Another user, Ahmed Hassan, pointed out that understanding the true situation would require meetings with both Imran Khan and his sister, Aleema Khan.

In a previous interview with journalist Moeed Pirzada, Jack Bergman indicated that a meeting with Imran Khan would be a positive step and expressed a commitment to facilitating such an encounter.

However, he clarified that this current visit primarily represented the caucus rather than an official position of the U.S. government or the Trump administration.

Several PTI-aligned social media accounts have encouraged users to reach out via email to delegation members Jack Bergman, Thomas Suozzi, and Jonathan Jackson to voice their concerns.

Journalist Shaheen Sehbai raised important questions regarding the objectives of the U.S. Congress members’ visit, speculating whether they sought only the military’s perspective or aimed for a more balanced discussion.

Analyst Muzammil Suhrawardi commented sarcastically on the PTI’s lobbying efforts, remarking, “All lobbying efforts have failed… dollars have gone to waste.”

Previously, these congressional members had shown support for Imran Khan’s release and the restoration of democracy, leading PTI supporters to expect that the delegation’s visit would continue this advocacy.

However, the choice to meet with the Army Chief instead of Imran Khan has left many feeling disenchanted.
