The concept, presented by scientists from the Daegu Gyeongbuk Institute of Science and Technology, aims to replace lithium batteries, which deteriorate over time and require recharging.

This new battery is based on the principle of beta voltages, according to which the energy from beta radiation is converted into electricity. For this purpose, scientists use a radioactive carbon isotope called radiocarbon (carbon-14), which only emits beta particles.

Radiocarbon is a byproduct of nuclear reactions and, due to its low cost, availability, and potential for reuse, could be an environmentally friendly alternative.
