A major outage in India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) disrupted online payment services nationwide, leaving millions of users unable to complete transactions.

According to Downdetector, as of 7:50pm on Wednesday, over 2,750 complaints had been registered regarding UPI service failures. Google Pay users lodged 296 complaints, while Paytm users reported 119 issues.

The State Bank of India (SBI) platform saw 376 complaints, primarily concerning fund transfers and online banking disruptions.

Frustrated users took to social media to express their concerns. One user on X wrote, “For the first time in my life, I experienced UPI downtime. Not a bank issue, not a gateway issue — UPI itself is down, despite having a 100% uptime in February.”

Another user posted, “This is ridiculous! UPI isn’t working. My money was debited, but my friend never received it.”

A third user questioned, “Is UPI down right now? I tried paying via Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm, but nothing worked.”

Despite the disruption, India’s Finance Ministry highlighted UPI’s increasing dominance in digital payments. In January alone, UPI transactions exceeded 16.99 billion, with a total transaction value of Rs23.48 trillion, marking the highest ever recorded in a single month.

UPI remains the backbone of India’s digital payment ecosystem, facilitating 80% of all retail transactions.

In FY 2024-25 (up to January 2025), P2M (Person-to-Merchant) transactions accounted for 62.35%, while P2P (Person-to-Person) transactions made up 37.65%.

In December 2024, UPI transactions reached a record 16.73 billion, reflecting an 8% increase compared to the previous month.
