The resolution, presented by Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, was approved during the provincial assembly session.

Murad Ali Shah warned that these controversial canals would severely impact Sindh’s water supply, agriculture, and wildlife, stressing that the province will not accept any project that reduces water availability.

“This assembly urges the federal government to ensure water distribution as per official records,” Shah stated, adding that the proposed canals violate Sindh’s constitutional rights.

He declared the construction illegal and announced that the Sindh government would join the public in protesting against it.

PPP’s longstanding stance on water rights

Sindh Parliamentary Affairs Minister Zia Lanjar requested the assembly speaker to postpone the day’s agenda for a detailed discussion on the resolution.

Senior PPP leader Jam Khan Shoro reaffirmed the party’s commitment to fair water distribution, highlighting past resistance against projects like the Kalabagh Dam and the Thal Canal.

“PPP has always stood against projects that threaten Sindh’s water rights,” Shoro stated, recalling Benazir Bhutto’s protest at Kamo Shaheed, as well as resolutions passed by Qaim Ali Shah and Nisar Khuhro.

He also credited Asif Ali Zardari’s 18th Amendment for strengthening provincial autonomy and preventing unilateral approval of such projects.

Shoro further noted that the Jalalpur Canal project, approved in 2014 when the GDA was part of the federal government, had no legal basis in water agreements.

Condemnation of Balochistan terrorist attack

The Sindh Assembly also condemned the recent terrorist attack in Balochistan. Senior Minister Sharjeel Memon praised security forces for their swift response and offered prayers for the martyrs.

Members observed a moment of silence for the victims of the Jaffar Express attack, prayed for the injured, and paid tribute to Pakistan Army personnel for their sacrifices.

Additionally, Murad Ali Shah requested prayers for the late Nawab Yousuf Talpur, acknowledging his contributions to Sindh’s politics.
