Drug shortage at Mayo Hospital: More suspensions after Punjab CM’s action

Following Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz’s action over the medicine shortage at Mayo Hospital, additional suspensions have been ordered.

Sources confirm that the Specialised Healthcare and Medical Education Department has suspended the hospital’s chief pharmacist, instructing them to report to the department.

Meanwhile, Secretary Pharmacy Council Punjab, Zaka-ur-Rehman, has been given additional charge as Mayo Hospital’s chief pharmacist.

Meanwhile, the Young Doctors Association (YDA) Punjab has strongly opposed the suspension of Mayo Hospital’s Medical Superintendent (MS), calling it an unfair decision.

YDA Punjab President Dr Shoaib Niazi stated that suspending Professor Faisal Masood was a disrespect to all doctors and the medical profession.

“Professor Faisal Masood is not just an MS but an outstanding doctor and teacher whose students serve in hospitals across Pakistan,” said Dr Shoaib.

He added that becoming a professor requires 20 to 25 years of dedication and that doctors sacrifice their personal lives for their profession.

Dr Shoaib further alleged that a political figure had dismissed Professor Faisal to cover up their own incompetence.

“This sends a clear message that the country serves only the elite,” he said.

He also revealed that Mayo Hospital had not received Rs4 billion in funding and that hospitals across Punjab were facing severe medicine shortages. He demanded a third-party audit to bring real change.

The suspensions follow CM Maryam Nawaz’s surprise visit to Mayo Hospital, where patients and attendants voiced numerous complaints.

Expressing her anger over poor management and substandard facilities, she reprimanded the hospital administration and immediately removed the MS, stating that the public’s suffering was unacceptable.
