The Supreme Court-formed judicial committee’s recommendations for resolving these cases have now been made public.

During a meeting chaired by Chief Justice Yahya Afridi on November 7, 2024, it was revealed that 108,366 cases remain pending in higher courts, involving a staggering 4,457 billion rupees.

The briefing further highlighted that nearly 6,000 tax revenue cases are stuck in the Supreme Court, while around 2,000 cases are under trial in various tribunals and courts, many of which are under stay orders.

To expedite tax dispute resolutions, the Supreme Court’s committee has recommended the establishment of an Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) unit within the apex court.

Additionally, it suggested monitoring the ADR systems of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) and other state institutions.

The committee has also proposed setting up ADR cells in the Supreme Court and all high courts to minimise delays and ensure timely revenue collection.
