The victims, 25-year-old Taha Ali and his 22-year-old wife Dua Zahra, had travelled from Karachi’s Malir district to a remote village guesthouse, approximately 145 kilometres from Muzaffarabad.

According to the deputy commissioner, with temperatures plunging to -10°C, the couple kept a gas heater running overnight while sealing the room’s windows and doors.

Guesthouse staff had reportedly advised them to move the heater outside after 30 minutes, but they did not follow the recommendation.

The next morning, when staff knocked on their door, they received no response, unlike the other guests. Alarmed, they informed the District Disaster Management Authority.

Upon entering, authorities found the couple lifeless — the woman lying on the bed and the man collapsed on the floor.

The bodies were later transported to Muzaffarabad for legal formalities before being handed over to their family. They were then moved to Islamabad Airport’s cargo terminal for transportation to Karachi.

According to relatives, Taha was a mechanical engineer, while Dua was a BBA student.

The couple had married on February 4, with their wedding reception held on February 8. They had departed for their honeymoon on February 11 via train. Their last phone conversation with family took place on Friday at 9 PM.

They were scheduled to check out of the guesthouse on Saturday morning to continue their journey to Neelum Valley.

However, tragedy struck when they reportedly succumbed to suffocation in their room.
