Daytime entry ban imposed on heavy traffic in Karachi

In a bid to reduce traffic congestion and accidents, Karachi authorities have imposed a daytime ban on heavy traffic, allowing movement only between 11pm and 6am.

The decision was taken during a high-level meeting chaired by Sindh Home Minister Ziaul Hassan Lanjar, who also announced strict legal action against anyone blocking roads.

The meeting addressed the rising number of traffic accidents in the city, with officials agreeing to restrict all heavy vehicles except garbage collection and essential transport.

The minister emphasised the need for improved traffic management, stating that solid waste management trucks must be tagged within 15 days or face fines.

Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab stressed that public safety remains the top priority, warning that non-compliance by waste management vehicles would lead to strict action.

He also proposed forming a WhatsApp group to monitor traffic police performance and accident reports.

Traffic-related fatalities have surged in Karachi, with 21 deaths recorded in the first eight days of February alone.

Recent accidents include a high-speed coach killing a 12-year-old boy and a collision that left a 15-month-old child dead and his mother injured, according to media reports.

In response to the lack of strict enforcement against heavy vehicles violating restricted hours, frustrated citizens have taken matters into their own hands. In some areas, locals stopped water tankers, checked drivers’ licences, and even demanded on-the-spot police action.

Authorities have vowed stricter measures, including issuing fines through head constables and enforcing Section 144 to curb violations.

Karachi Commissioner is expected to issue official guidelines soon.
