Rana Sanaullah: Govt plans reference against two Senior SC judges

Advisor to the Prime Minister on Political and Public Affairs, Rana Sanaullah, has hinted at the possibility of filing a misconduct reference against two senior judges of the Supreme Court.

Speaking on Aaj News’ programme Spotlight with host Munizae Jahangir, he alleged that these judges frequently write letters on various matters, which somehow reach the media before official channels.

“In my opinion, their actions could be linked to judicial misconduct at some level,” said Rana Sanaullah, who also serves as the President of PML-N Punjab.

Commenting on the judges’ behaviour, he further claimed that their actions were disrupting the smooth functioning of the Supreme Court.

“These two judges write letters on every issue and then resort to boycotts,” he added.

He said that Chief Justice of Pakistan Yahya Afridi has maintained complete neutrality in ongoing judicial matters.

He added that if the Chief Justice deems it necessary to appoint a new judge to the Islamabad High Court, then his discretion should not be challenged.

Speaking on the TV programme, Sanaullah said that his party wanted a constitutional court, but a special constitutional bench was formed due to the demands of PTI and JUI-F.

He also hinted at discussions on early elections but criticised PTI for not engaging in meaningful dialogue.

Furthermore, he expressed readiness to investigate election rigging and the events of November 26 through a parliamentary committee.

Commenting on Imran Khan’s actions, he alleged that the PTI chairman is writing letters to spread propaganda against the judiciary and the military.

He also mentioned that if Maulana Fazlur Rehman joins the opposition alliance, more constructive discussions can take place.

On the IMF delegation’s meeting with the Chief Justice, Sanaullah dismissed concerns, clarifying that it was a routine meeting that was originally scheduled for April or September but got delayed.

He emphasised that the IMF agreement includes provisions requiring judicial engagement, and the matter is being unnecessarily politicised.

Regarding lawyers’ concerns, he said that if the reasons behind their dissatisfaction are identified, they can certainly be addressed.

He also questioned why the principle of seniority was deemed violated, urging critics to read Article 200, which explicitly allows for the transfer of judges.

He further took a jibe at legal expert Salman Akram Raja, accusing him of having a political agenda.

However, he acknowledged Raja’s right to express his views but questioned whether the Constitution mandates that the reason for judicial transfers must be disclosed.
