This decision, which will remain in effect “until further notice,” does not affect letter mail, according to a statement released on the USPS website.

The USPS did not provide a specific reason for this suspension. However, it comes in the wake of an additional 10% tariff imposed by US President Donald Trump on all goods imported from China.

This executive order eliminates a previous exemption that allowed items valued at $800 (£641) or less to enter the US without incurring duties or taxes.

This “de minimis” tax exemption has been under scrutiny due to the rise of Chinese e-commerce platforms like Shein and Temu, which have expanded their reach to millions of US consumers.

Trade expert Deborah Elms noted that the new tariffs will particularly impact goods previously shipped directly from China to the US.

A report from a US Congressional committee revealed that nearly half of all parcels entering the US under the de minimis exemption were sent from China.
