An increase in salaries has been approved for parliamentarians, sources said on Friday. Each member would receive a monthly salary of Rs519,000 per month.

The salary increase would be effective from January 1, 2025. But increase in the salaries of the National Assembly speaker and deputy speaker has not been approved; they would continue to receive Rs218,000 per month.

Sources added that the finance committee does not have the authority to raise the salaries of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker, as confirmed by the Speaker’s office.

Last week, the National Assembly speaker forwarded the finance committee’s recommendations for a salary increase to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

PTI lawmaker Ali Muhammad Khan told News Insight with Amir Zia on Monday that lawmakers’ salaries have not been increased in over the last 10 years. “Lawmakers who belong to the middle-class section of society have been seeking an increase in the salaries,” he said.

Ali clarified that he personally did not demand any salary raise.

He was of the view that it was not an appropriate time to seek such a raise as the country’s economic situation was not better.
